1971Soyuz 11 was the second manned mission to the world's first space station, Salyut 1, and was launched on June 6, 1971 from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The mission was crewed by three cosmonauts, Georgy Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov, and Viktor Patsayev.
After a successful 23-day stay on Salyut 1, the crew of Soyuz 11 prepared to return to Earth. On June 29, 1971, the Soyuz 11 descent module re-entered the Earth's atmosphere and began the descent towards the ground. However, during the descent, a valve on the spacecraft's instrument module failed to close properly, causing a catastrophic loss of cabin pressure.
The crew, who were not wearing spacesuits, were killed by asphyxiation within seconds of the decompression. The capsule's automatic landing system successfully brought the spacecraft to a safe landing in Kazakhstan, where recovery teams discovered the dead cosmonauts.
The Soyuz 11 disaster was a tragic event in the history of human spaceflight, and it led to improvements in spacecraft safety, including the development of emergency procedures and the introduction of spacesuits worn during re-entry.
