The Long March Commenced
1934On October 16, 1934, the embattled Chinese Communists break through Nationalist enemy lines and begin an epic flight from their encircled headquarters in southwest China. Known as Ch’ang Cheng—the “Long March”—the retreat lasted 368 days and covered 6,000 miles, more than twice the distance from New York to San Francisco.
Walt Disney Was Founded
1923Disney was founded on October 16, 1923, by brothers Walt Disney and Roy Oliver Disney as Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio; it also operated under the names Walt Disney Studio and Walt Disney Productions before changing to its current name in 1986.
China Conducted Its First Successful Nuclear Test
1964China explodes its first atomic bomb at the Lop Nor testing site in Xinjiang Province. In total, China conducts 23 atmospheric tests and 22 underground tests at the site.
