The Ender Dragon is fun and all, but wouldn’t it be cool if there were more dragons to slay, or maybe even tame? What about flying on one?

Whether you’re looking for daunting new dragons to battle or would like to tame some cute fire-breathing creatures that may be able to accidentally burn your epic wooden house down (that you spent a whole weekend working on), or maybe a mod that lets you play as a dragon - rest assured, these mods have at least one of these features, and then some.

In no particular order of quality, here is a list of the best Minecraft dragon mods:

  • Ice and Fire: Dragons
  • Wyrmroost
  • DragonRealm
  • Dragon Mounts: Legacy
  • Dragon Survival

Ice and Fire: Dragons

introduces three types of dragons: ice, fire, and lightning dragons. Each type is tameable, and each is a force to be reckoned with.

The biomes ice and fire dragons spawn mostly depend on the temperature. As for lightning dragons, you can find them in Savanna, Badlands, and Jungle biomes. Be careful underground, though, as there is a small chance you’ll find one of these dragons in their own dragon cave.

Dragons are also categorized into five stages. The younger ones, stages 1-3, are found on the surface, while the tougher ones appear underground. These dragons are not tameable. You can only tame and breed the ones you hatched from eggs. To get an egg, you’ll have to take down a stage 4-5 female dragon, which is easier said than done.

Aside from dragons, which act as hostile minibosses, the mod also adds in a range of other passive, neutral, and hostile beasts, such as pixies, hippogryphs, ghosts, trolls, hydras, sirens, death worms, and more.

Wyrmroost

Compared to the previous mod, is a lot more dragon-focused. As of writing, there are ten different dragons you can come across, and with the modders planning to add more, there’s no shortage of dragon fun to be had here. There are even plans to add a whole new dimension to the game - a world packed with new items, blocks, and dragons!

Not all dragons are tameable, but each tameable one has something useful to offer. The Dragonfruit Drakes, for example, are slow non-winged mounts that won’t help you in combat but are good for easily clearing away tons of grass and plants in an area you’d like to, say, set up a farm. The Overworld Drakes, on the other hand, are highly effective in combat but can be quite difficult to tame.

Alpines are tameable neutral dragons that attack by flapping their huge long wings to send a strong force of wind instead of breathing fire. Meanwhile, Royal Red dragons just want to watch the world burn and are hostile by default, requiring you to knock them out before trying to tame them with some meat.

The mod adds various new items, such as a dragon staff that gives you more control over your tamed beasts. There’s also a new ore you can mine that lets you craft a better sword, basic tools, and armor.

DragonRealm

There’s no taming or breeding in this action-focused Minecraft dragon mod.

Not only does add three types of dragons, upgradeable tools, and armor, but there are also four different dragon scrolls that give you neat special abilities, such as igniting every hostile mob around you.

You’ll need a craftable item called the dragon talisman in your inventory in order to use any ability you’ve learned. The scrolls can be found in chests in the Overworld but can also be dropped by slaying dragons.

Dragon Mounts: Legacy

adds in 8 different types of dragons. All of them are tameable and mountable and only attack if provoked. Two of them are immune to lava and fire, while only one likes water. The rest are damaged by water.

These dragons can only be found in the form of dragon eggs laying inside loot chests. Simply place the egg you’ve found anywhere and right-click it to make it start hatching. You can stop the hatching process by picking the egg back up.

Once hatched, the dragon will continue to grow to an adult, but you don’t have to wait until then to tame the nicely-modeled creature. Every dragon is tameable using raw fish, while a bone is used to tell the dragon whether it should stay put or follow you around by holding Shift and right-clicking on it.

Despite the lack of fire breathing, the dragons are still useful in combat. You can heal dragons by feeding them raw meat, with each type of meat healing them by a varying amount. At least you don’t have to worry about them burning your house down.

As the title of the mod suggests, the key point of the mod is using the dragons as a great way to explore. You can even stop midair while on the dragon, letting you get a good overview of the area around you.

You can breed dragons that aren't the same type, but the baby will randomly end up looking like one of the two parents.

Dragon Survival

If you’re looking for a dragon mod for Minecraft that actually lets you play as a dragon, then you have to play .

This mod lets you transform into one of 3 dragons: forest, sea, or cave dragon. To do that, you’ll need a dragon altar. To create an altar, you’ll need an Elder dragon bone, which can be crafted using Elder dragon dust. There’s a chance to get dust by mining ore. Once you have an Elder dragon bone, you can convert certain blocks into an altar, such as stone or oak wood.

Each dragon has their own pros and cons. Forest dragons are poisonous but afraid of being in dark caves; sea dragons thrive underwater but can’t stay long on land, while the cave dragon loves the underground and lava but gets damaged by water. The food each type likes is also different.

Every dragon starts off small with no wings. To get wings, you’ll have to make a trip to the End and talk with the Ender Dragon.

There are three stages your dragon grows through: newborn, young, and adult. You can create your own dragon nest, which changes depending on the stage you’re in. You can even craft a dragon door!

If you go about massacring villagers, you can actually gain the reputation of an evil dragon, causing dragon hunters to spawn, so you better think twice before hurting those poor Squidwards!

The creator of this mod has also made a fantastic designed with Dragon Survival at the core.
